Middle East Buyers on the up |

A SIGNIFICANT rise of Middle East buyers helped to swell bidder numbers above 1,000 for Thimbleby & Shorland’s annual Hewden Plant Auction.
The NDA Agent, based in Reading, has held the auction contract for Hewden Plant for the last 6 years and the sales have increased in size year-on-year, with the quality of plant helping to attract a wide range of UK and overseas buyers. The auction in July comprised of more than 3,000 lots ranging from small tools to cranes and excavators and was held at the Hertfordshire County Showground, covering 20 acres in all, off Junction 9 of the M1. With such a vast area to cover, Thimbleby & Shorland operated vans as mobile rostrums, with 3 qualified and highly experienced Auctioneers running at the same time, selling different categories of plant, aided by more than 20 company support staff. Thimbleby & Shorland Director & Auctioneer Michael Kimber said: “It was noticeable this year that more buyers from the Middle East attended, as well as UK buyers. ”We have the experienced staff to deal with sales such as these. We are great believers in holding live auctions with buyers present. It creates a lot of atmosphere and helps trade.”

Record Number of Retail Auction Lots Attract Press Interest |

NOTTINGHAM NDA Member, John Pye & Sons, have attracted national press interest for their increasing volume of electrical auction sales. The Guardian Money Editor, Patrick Collinson, visited the auction house to report on the company’s growing secondary market retail disposals as a flip side to the post Christmas profit warnings being issued by retailers to The City. ‘Pyes’ hold two auctions every week from their 5.2 acre asset facility in Nottingham (pictured right) and in the last 12 months have auctioned more than 1 million retail units ranging from laptops and plasma TVs to iPods and SAT NAVs for some of the biggest UK electrical retail PLCs.

Regency Mahogany Cabinet Sells for £135,000 |

AUCTIONEER Colin Young is a regular face on TV’s ‘Bargain Hunt’, ‘Flog It!’, ‘Cash in the Attic’ and Dickinson’s Real Deal’.
Recently the NDA Member attracted more publicity when he sold a Regency Classicism Mahogany breakfront Side Cabinet for £135,000 in Grantham, Lincs. Colin Young, of Golding Young & Co, said: “Something of this quality is usually a signature piece for a specific designer or maker. Despite much research no-one was able to make an attribution on this occasion. Nevertheless pieces of this calibre come on the market so infrequently that the market price reflected the rarity.”

NDA Leeds Opens Custom Facility |
|
NDA Leeds Agent, CW Harrison & Son, co-founder of the Nationwide Disposals Agency, has taken occupancy of a new auction hub. The facility (pictured below) in Ossett, West Yorkshire, ten miles from Leeds, was purpose built for the 128-year-old firm.
The facility incorporates 40,000 sq. ft. of indoor sales space and a 1 acre secure compound. The first uction held at the premises attracted more than 400 bidders from all over the UK. CW Harrison & Son proprietor Dion Harrison said: “eBay once predicted auction houses to become history though we disagreed. ”This investment proves our confidence in the future of asset realisation and the value of physical, tangible facilities against the electronic ether.”

NDA N. Ireland Reports an Upsurge of Disposals |

NDA Northern Ireland, Wilsons Auctions, have reported a surge in disposal sales activity over the last 8 months.
The company, with multi site operations across Ireland and the UK, recently completed the sale of one of the largest transport companies in Northern Ireland, Reid Transport (pictured right). Wilsons were appointed as sales agents by Liquidators PriceWaterhouseCoopers and within six weeks of instruction had sold the company’s rolling stock of 40 tractor units and over 100 trailers at an auction which attracted more than 200 commercial trade buyers. The haulage auction has capped a successful spell of disposals which started in the summer of 2007, when Wilsons completed a £10.1m sale of the 22,000 sq. ft. former Daewoo site in County Antrim. The site sits on 33.5 acres and attracted interest from 20 parties though Wilsons soon had this narrowed to a shortlist of seven for instructing client, Daewoo. Over the last 8 months Wilsons have also held Ireland’s largest tractor action, which attracted approx. 1,000 buyers from Ireland and abroad to the sales site in County Cork (pictured right). Just as noteworthy is a star studded vehicle currently being sold by Wilsons; a Porsche 911 Carrera S Tiptronic with David Beckham logged on the V5 form as a previous owner. The car comes with David and Victoria’s personalised number plate: R771 VDB (R7 = David’s shirt number, VDB = Victoria and David Beckham). Guide price?...£100,000.
